How to tell whether a kids course is actually working
Finished lessons are the easiest thing to count and the least useful thing to know. Here is what to look at instead.
How to tell whether a kids course is actually working
Completion is a comforting number. It goes up, it never goes down, and it fits on a dashboard. It also tells you almost nothing about whether a child understood anything.
A better question is whether they can explain the idea to someone else. Ask your child to teach you the thing they just learned. If they reach for the vocabulary from the lesson and get stuck, that is the moment worth returning to.
The second signal is what happens when they get something wrong. A child who is learning will try a different approach. A child who is only clicking through will try the same thing again, faster.
This is why our progress bar counts watched minutes rather than opened lessons. It is a duller number, and a more honest one.

The point about stopping places is the bit I had never thought about. Obvious in hindsight.

This matched what we saw at home almost exactly. Thank you for writing it down.
